PlayStation 5 hardware specifications revealed

Nearly a year after Sony first began discussing its next-generation console, the company provided detailed information on the after the presentation.

PlayStation 5 hardware specifications revealed

During the presentation, Cerny said the CPU will feature eight Zen 2 cores with a variable frequency up to 3.5 GHz, and the GPU will be “a custom AMD GPU based on their RDNA 2 technology.” The peak GPU performance will be 10.28 teraflops, based on 36 compute units running at up to 2.23 GHz.

While the technical capability of the PS5’s hardware falls short of the , the next-gen consoles will not be defined solely by raw power output. For one thing, the PS5’s processing hardware is much more efficient than the PS4’s, so a single compute unit delivers more performance. Cerny said that the PS5’s 36 compute units are roughly equivalent to 58 PS4 compute units, since the PS5 compute units have 62% more transistors.

“The change to a variable-frequency approach will show significant gains for gamers,” said Cerny during the presentation.

PlayStation 5 hardware specifications revealed

Perhaps the most significant component of the PS5 is that the console’s internal storage will be a solid-state drive. In interviews last year, Cerny said that Sony has built custom software and connectivity for the console’s SSD to enable vast improvements in loading times and in generating game environments. Cerny confirmed that the drive, which will offer 825 GB of storage, will connect via the PCI Express 4.0 interface.

by buying some off-the-shelf PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSDs and installing them in an expansion bay in the console. However, there are caveats — Sony is undertaking a certification program, since the drives must meet or exceed the speed of the console’s internal SSD and must fit within the bay. The certification is “likely to be a bit past [the PS5 launch],” said Cerny, so don’t go buying any SSDs just yet.

Audio Tempest 3D AudioTech

Cerny also focused on the PS5’s audio capabilities. Sony built a custom hardware unit for 3D audio that it calls Tempest 3D AudioTech. This was partly because of the company’s specific goals with audio, which precluded the use of existing object-based audio solutions such as Dolby Atmos. (Cerny also noted that Sony wanted the PS5’s 3D audio to be available to all users, not just those with headphones or sound systems with support for a licensed standard such as Dolby Atmos.)

PlayStation 5 hardware specifications revealed

“Headphone audio is the current gold standard for 3D audio on PlayStation 5,” said Cerny, adding that Sony is working on 3D audio via sound systems and virtual surround delivered through TV speakers. He added that because Tempest 3D AudioTech’s positional sound is based on a mechanism known as the head-related transfer function (HRTF) that is different for every human being — it’s like a fingerprint — the PS5 will allow users to choose between five different HRTF settings to get the best 3D audio experience.

The PS5 will offer hardware acceleration for when the console launches later this year. And users can hook up a USB external hard drive to the PS5 and run PS4 games off of it.

Sony is planning to launch the PS5 in the , which is the same release window that Microsoft has given for the Xbox Series X.

With Blu-ray being a proprietary Sony technology, it struck many people as odd that the Japanese manufacturer didn’t implement a 4K player into their revised PS4 Slim or PS4 Pro consoles; the latter especially, considering its status as a premium piece of hardware. As part of today’s deluge of news surrounding the upcoming  dropped, with the device said to boast both haptic feedback and adaptive triggers over its PS4 predecessor.

Is the PS5 capable of running 4k 120 FPS? That's as good as most high-end PCs.

The CEO has confirmed they’re “shooting for” 120fps. Honestly, 4K is already demanding enough in a full tower PC, and they expect to fit that into this? I mean from what I’m reading, a good couple of articles agree that it’s not likely going to happen. Especially when they jump from 30fps to 120? The difference between 60 and 90 is barely noticeable if at all. 120fps is such overkill.

Whether you're in a dorm or simply have a small space, monitors are a great alternative to large TVs for console gaming. Monitors are usually a lot cheaper, they look great close up, and they take up a lot less space. Many high-end gaming monitors also offer better motion performance and lower input lag than any TV on the market, which is great if you're a competitive online gamer.

Do note that with the implementation of test bench 1.1, we now test for response time and input lag when playing at 60Hz. However, our recommendations were made prior to that change. We will update our recommendations shortly.

We've reviewed over 100 monitors so far, and below you'll find our top picks for the best monitors for PS4 and PS4 Pro gaming. See our recommendations for the .

The 5 Best Gaming Monitors For PS4 - Spring 2020: Reviews

    1. Best Gaming Monitor For PS4: Acer Nitro XV273

      Size 27"

      Resolution 1920x1080

      Max Refresh Rate 240 Hz

      LCD Type IPS

      Variable Refresh Rate FreeSync

The best gaming monitor for PS4 that we've tested so far is the Acer Nitro XV273X. This is a 1080p monitor with an IPS panel, which provides great viewing angles so the image looks good no matter where you sit. It has an impressive peak brightness, making it suitable for bright rooms, and the screen's matte coating diffuses light decently well. It has a low input lag for an extremely responsive gaming experience, and its fast response time results in a clear picture with minimal motion blur. There's also HDR support, although its performance is limited by the monitor's inability to display a wide color gamut.

There are a few features that the PS4 may not be able to take advantage of right now, but could be quite useful in the future, such as its 240Hz refresh rate and support for FreeSync variable refresh rate. Also, this monitor isn't ideal for dark room viewing, as it has a mediocre contrast ratio that makes blacks look like gray. There are a number of connectivity options to plug in other devices like a media streamer or your PC, and it's equipped with a USB hub that has four USB 3.0 ports to charge your mobile devices. You can save some desk space by using its integrated speakers and if you're worried about eye strain, this monitor has a flicker-free backlight.

The 5 Best Gaming Monitors For PS4 - Spring 2020: Reviews

Overall, even though there are features that the PS4 doesn't support at this time, this is still an excellent gaming monitor for most people.

    2. Dark Room Alternative: MSI Optix G27C4

      Size 27"

      Resolution 1920x1080

      Max Refresh Rate 165 Hz

      LCD Type VA

      Variable Refresh Rate FreeSync

The 5 Best Gaming Monitors For PS4 - Spring 2020: Reviews

If you like gaming in the dark, you should go with a monitor that has a better contrast ratio and black uniformity, such as the MSI Optix G27C4. Like the , this monitor has a 1080p resolution, but its impressive contrast ratio allows it to produce deep, inky blacks, which is great for dark room viewing. It has a good response time as well as an outstanding input lag, and it has a black frame insertion feature that can help reduce the appearance of motion blur. Unfortunately, it doesn't have much in terms of extra features and it doesn't have any USB ports.

The Acer is a better monitor overall and offers more features, but if dark room performance is more important to you, then go with the MSI.

    3. Best 4k Gaming Monitor For PS4 Pro: LG 27UK650-W

      Size 27"

      Resolution 3840x2160

      Max Refresh Rate 60 Hz

      LCD Type IPS

The 5 Best Gaming Monitors For PS4 - Spring 2020: Reviews

      Variable Refresh Rate FreeSync

The best monitor for PS4 Pro that we've tested so far is the LG 27UK650-W. With its 4k resolution, images are delivered with incredible detail and clarity. It has a fast response time that results in very little blur-trail, and input lag is outstanding, making every button press feel amazingly responsive. With an impressive peak brightness and decent reflection handling, this IPS monitor is well-suited for bright rooms. Additionally, it has wide viewing angles so images remain accurate when viewed from the side, which is great for co-op gaming. Sadly, the monitor's mediocre contrast ratio and black uniformity make it difficult to recommend for dark room gaming, although this is typical for an IPS panel.

This monitor supports HDR, but as it's unable to display a wide color gamut and its HDR peak brightness is rather ordinary, HDR content doesn't look much different from SDR content. There aren't many inputs available, but enough to connect your computer, a media streamer, or a Blu-Ray player. If you also game on your computer, this monitor supports FreeSync variable refresh rate, which reduces screen tearing when gaming.

On the whole, if you're looking for a 4k monitor with impressive gaming performance, go with this one.

    4. Larger Alternative: BenQ EW3270U

      Size 32"

      Resolution 3840x2160

      Max Refresh Rate 60 Hz

      LCD Type VA

      Variable Refresh Rate FreeSync

If you have a bit more room to spare for a larger screen, then take a look at the BenQ EW3270U. Like the , it has a 4k resolution and a 60Hz refresh rate, but its 32 inch screen provides much more space for an immersive gaming experience and for productivity. It's also a good option for those who like to game in the dark, as it has a VA panel that has a much higher contrast ratio. There are downsides, though, as it has narrower viewing angles and it can't get as bright. Also, the stand only provides tilt adjustment, which is quite disappointing.

Overall, the LG is a better choice for most people, but the BenQ provides more screen real estate, as long as you're okay with a few compromises.

    5. Best Budget Gaming Monitor For PS4: ASUS VG279Q

      Size 27"

      Resolution 1920x1080

      Max Refresh Rate 144 Hz

      LCD Type IPS

      Variable Refresh Rate FreeSync

If your budget is limited, consider the ASUS VG279Q, the best budget gaming monitor for the PS4. This monitor sports an IPS panel with a 1080p resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate. It has a good build quality despite its price, and its outstanding ergonomics put monitors that cost significantly more to shame. You can adjust the monitor however you like and it can rotate to portrait mode in either direction. Like most IPS panels, it has a low contrast ratio and sub-par black uniformity, so it isn't ideal for gaming in the dark. However, it does have an impressive peak brightness and good reflection handling for use in well-lit rooms.

Response time is good and there's an optional black frame insertion feature to help reduce motion blur. Input lag is excellent and there's support for FreeSync if you also game on a PC or Xbox One. It doesn't support HDR, but there are a few convenient extra features, such as the ability to put a crosshair for shooter games and a frame rate counter overlay. The backlight is flicker-free and there are speakers built-in.

With the ASUS VG279Q, you won't have to spend a fortune to get a great gaming experience.

    Notable Mentions

    • ViewSonic Elite XG270: The ViewSonic Elite XG270 is a good alternative to the Acer Nitro XV273X, but its black uniformity is significantly worse.
    • Acer Predator X27: The Acer Predator X27 is a great gaming monitor for the PS4 Pro, but very expensive.
    • LG 32UD99-W: The LG 32UD99-W is a larger alternative to the LG 27UK650-W with similar performance and features, but it costs a lot more.

    All Reviews

Due to some limitations with our current Test Bench, the score listed here does not entirely represent the logic behind our picks. We currently measure the response time on monitors using the native refresh rate. Monitors with a refresh rate higher than 60Hz will perform worse than measured, as the PS4 and PS4 Pro can only output at 60Hz. We've taken this into consideration when making our picks.

Our recommendations are based on what we think are the best monitors for PS4 currently available. They are adapted to be valid for most people, in each price range. Rating is based on our review, factoring in price and feedback from our visitors.

If you would prefer to make your own decision, here is the list of all of our monitor reviews. Be careful not to get too caught up in the details. Most monitors are good enough to please most people, and the things we fault monitors on are often not noticeable unless you really look for them.

    • Sony has made a big deal about the PS5’s new audio technology.
    • The company has a long history of audio technology, working on it since at least the 1950s.
    • With that sort of track record, we can probably expect a massive leap in the power and quality of audio in the next generation.

The Xbox Series X and PS5 from Microsoft and Sony, respectively, are due to arrive in 2020, almost 7 years after the launch of the Xbox One and the PS4.

Xbox Series X vs. PS5: Which console is right for you?

We have gathered all of the rumors and confirmed information regarding the , but it seems unlikely that this is the final retail design.

Winner: Xbox One X. To be fair, we don't have an official image of the PS5 yet, but based on what we know at the moment, we like the understated look of the Xbox Series X.

Xbox Series X vs. PS5: Specs

    Xbox Series XPS5

    Performance target4K @ 60 FPS, Up to 120 FPS and 8K4K @ 60 FPS, Up to 120 FPS and 8K

Winner: Xbox Series X. Sony put a lot of weight into the speed of its SSD and we'll have to see what that looks like in real-world performance, but at least on paper, the Xbox Series X is the more powerful gaming console.

Xbox Series X vs. PS5: Performance

In both cases, the proof will come when we can actually see these consoles perform, but for the time being, we have the claims from both companies and they are very close to one another.

The PS5 will be capable of 4K gaming at up to 120 fps and have support for 8K with no specific frame rate target identified yet.

Support for ray tracing is another big addition for the PS5 as this will both deliver considerably more realistic lighting in games as well as some of the 3D audio effects that Sony has boasted about.

Things are fairly similar on the Xbox Series X side with 4K gaming at 120 fps and support for 8K gaming without specific frame rate targets. Ray tracing will also be on board, although they have made no related audio claims.

Both consoles will also feature custom SSDs that they are promising will deliver dramatically reduced load times versus the previous generation. The PS5 could be the winner on this front with dramatically faster (5.5 GB/s vs. 2.4 GB/s) throughput for its SSD.

Winner: Xbox Series X. With both the Xbox Series X and PS5 having virtually identical stated performance it's too hard to make a determination here, but given the better overall specs of the Xbox Series X until we have real-world evidence to the contrary it seems like it will have the edge.

Xbox Series X vs. PS5: Controller

Neither company is straying far from the basic controller design of the previous generation consoles, and most of the updates look to be internal.

The most notable addition to the Xbox Series X controller is a prominent share button in the center of the controller to send content to friends, much like Sony introduced with the PS4's DualShock 4.

    Xbox Elite Controller Series 2

Less visible changes are the updated hybrid D-Pad and improved latency to eliminate the delay between a button press and action on the screen. Finally, the new controller is slightly smaller than the Xbox One controller and will be backward compatible with the older console.

We are limited to a patent image on the Sony side (via . The light bar has been eliminated and the grips of the controller appear slightly more curved.

(Image credit: Joeri Mostmans / Shutterstock.com)

Again, there are internal changes with the controller providing dramatically improved haptic feedback capable of depicting, for example, the change in the feel of the road in a racing game, and the triggers will offer variable resistance based on the activity being performed in-game.

Winner: PS5. Some of this is going to come down to personal preference certainly, but the DualShock 4 was our favorite controller of the previous generation. Prior to testing the improved haptics and variable resistance triggers, the DualShock 5 sounds amazing.

Xbox Series X vs. PS5: Backward compatibility

Microsoft and Sony have both promised backward compatibility with previous generation consoles.

Xbox Series X claims the title for backward compatibility champ with Microsoft promising the next-gen console will not only play Xbox One games, but it will also include Game Pass games and over 600 Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. In addition, Microsoft said these games will all play better than ever before with improved load times, frame rates and visuals.

Beyond games, Xbox One accessories will also be supported by the Xbox Series X.

Sony isn't far behind, however, with confirmed backward compatibility for almost all of the top 100 PS4 games at launch as well as PSVR hardware.

Winner: Xbox Series X. Sony learned its lesson and is at least offering backward compatibility, but Microsoft has made far more extensive commitments for those that are already invested in Xbox or would like to explore the extensive back catalog of past Xbox consoles.

Xbox Series X vs. PS5: Games

With similar architecture between the Xbox Series X and the PS5, most PC titles should find their way to both consoles given the presumably reduced developer costs of doing so.

As far as exclusives go, we still don't have much to go on, but we can make some reasonable estimations.

Of course, Xbox Series X will have Halo Infinite but technically the first officially announced Xbox Series X title is Senua's Saga: HellBlade 2. New installments of Gears of War and Forza will no doubt find their way onto the Xbox Series X as well.

There are no confirmed exclusives for the PS5 yet, but of course, we expect sequels to God of War, Horizon: Zero Dawn and Spider-Man. Some exclusive releases due out this year, such as Last of Us: Part II and Ghosts of Tsushima, will also likely be ported to the new console.

Delayed titles that should find their way onto both consoles near launch should include Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Quarantine, Gods and Monsters, and Watch Dogs: Legion.

We expect this picture to clear up over the coming months as we get clear of some of the spring games releases and both companies ramp up towards the console launches.

Winner: PS5. The PS4 was the consensus winner of this category in the previous generation, so as it stands Sony still has the better lineup of exclusive titles.

Xbox Series X vs. PS5: Outlook

While there is a lot yet to be decided, the Xbox Series X is the front runner so far.

The specs for the PS5 don't quite hold up to the Xbox Series X, and until Sony can show real-world results that its hardware is up to the challenge, we have to give the nod to the Xbox Series X.

Sony continues to have the more popular lineup of exclusive titles (even if we don't have launch availability info yet) and no major shakeups or announced exclusives have changed this yet. For nostalgic gamers, the Xbox Series X offers considerably more backward compatibility.

The PS5 also has one of the few clear differentiators between the two consoles in the form of PSVR. Microsoft has made it clear that VR is not part of its console plans.

This is shaping up to be a much closer competition than the Xbox One vs. PS4 at launch, but based on what we know right now, the Xbox Series X has the edge.

PS5 gameplay teaser: First EVER PlayStation 5 gameplay footage revealed

PS5 news has come thick and fast this week, with the first PlayStation 5 game getting confirmed and in-game gameplay footage getting also revealed. This year Sony has confirmed a number of details about the PS5 ahead of a rumoured big unveiling event next February. The PS4 makers have announced that the PS5 will be out next year, will support 8K visuals and boast ray tracing graphics.

Sony has also announced that the PS5 will be backwards compatible and have a controller which features haptic feedback instead of the current rumble tech.

And, as expected, it has also been confirmed that the PS4 successor will be called the PlayStation 5.

As the year comes to a close more PS5 news has dropped ahead of the console’s holiday 2020 release date.

This week at The Game Awards 2019 the first PlayStation 5 game was unveiled to the world.

    PS5

The upcoming PS5 game is called Godfall and is a fantasy loot slasher from Gearbox which is “focused on melee combat”.

The TGA trailer for Godfall showed in-engine footage, but since then gameplay footage of the PS5 title has also emerged.

The short snipped of in-game footage was revealed by PlayStation Lifestyle who did an interview with Godfall’s creative director Keith Lee.

The short PS5 gameplay footage merely shows a small part of a melee fight in Godfall, with hefty looking weapons-based combat teased.

Lee said that the Monster Hunter series was an influence on Godfall in terms of the gameplay, pinpointing the fast combos and diverse weapon playstyles.

Explaining what Godfall is about, Lee told PlayStation Lifestyle: “The trailer sets the context at the beginning of the game when you’re about to select your initial playable character.

“As an avatar, you play as one of the last remnants of an exalted Knight’s Order intent on stopping the apocalypse and preserving the last vestiges of their world.

“You will be able to play all three of the heroes you see by acquiring and donning their armour sets, known as Valorplates.

“Besides these three, you will uncover and equip additional ancient Valorplates lost in time in your journey, each with their own characteristics and historical lineage.”

Speaking about the benefits of working on the PS5, Lee said: “The exceptionally powerful SSD on the PlayStation 5 offers a new level of detail for each individual object as well as seamless loading of our expansiveness world.

“Our combat is kinesthetic in nature, so the new controller’s ‘adaptive triggers’ and haptic feedback will make moment-to-moment combat feel exhilarating and visceral.”

The game’s creative director and CEO of Counterplay Games also confirmed that Godfall would be a PS5 launch title.

Another element of the next-generation machine.

console), we now know exactly not only how much RAM the PS5 has, but also just how fast that RAM will be too. Without further ado then!

    PS5 System RAM

As delightfully confirmed by Mark Cerny during his PS5 livestream broadcast, we now know that the PS5 will boast 16GB of GDDR6 system RAM that will provide 448 GB/sec of bandwidth. That is, to put a finer point on it, screamingly fast and accompanies the other confirmed elements of the PS5 specification, such as the GPU and CPU, extremely nicely.

What Does RAM Do – Anything Useful?

Why yes, we’re glad you asked. If the brain of the PlayStation 5 is ostensibly its CPU, then the system RAM is arguably its short-term memory, for lack of a better description – and the PS5 has a very large short term memory to say the least.

Imagine it – you’re playing The Last of Us Part 2 in 4K at 60 frames per second but then you fancy watching some Hulu – you switch over to Hulu instantly, watch your favorite show and then go back to the game (again, instantly), with no progress lost. This is the future.

The PS5’s substantial allocation of GDDR6 RAM allows it to not only render much larger game worlds than ever before, but do so while simultaneously running a large number of other apps and games in the background in tandem with the system’s ridiculously powerful CPU.

This means that at a moment’s notice, you can flick from one app to another, or from one game to another and instantly pick up where you left off before. While nicer visuals are obviously one yardstick by which the next-generation experience is measured, we also think that massive Quality of Life improving features like this are right up there too.

PS5: release date, price, specs and news for the PlayStation 5

The PlayStation has always offered more to the AV world than just games. It has scored well with DVD playback, Blu-rays and 4K streaming over the years. So what will the PlayStation 5 have to offer at launch? Will it be an machine? Will it still support optical media? When is the PS5 release date? How much will the PS5 cost?

While we can’t quite answer all of this just yet, Sony PlayStation’s lead architect and console producer, Mike Cerny, did drop a whole load of what to expect from the PS5 in an

Sony started its CES 2020 press conference with a segment on the forthcoming PS5 and while no new specs were released or images shown, Sony did confirm the official PS5 logo.

The design... won't shock you. It stays in line with previous PlayStation logos, keeping it simple with white lines on a black background.

    Will the PlayStation 5 have a 4K Blu-ray drive?

Yes, the PS5 will play 4K Blu-rays. Cerny initially only confirmed the PS5 will have an optical disc drive, but has now, according to Wired, confirmed the presence of a 4K Blu-ray player.

It was disappointing that the PlayStation 4 didn't include a 4K Blu-ray drive, so we're glad to see Sony supporting the 4K disc format in the new console. Currently both the Xbox One S and X come with 4K disc drives which gives them extra appeal over the PS4 for home cinema enthusiasts. But the PS5 will bring the Ultra HD Blu-ray fight to Xbox...

    • . It's expected the the PS5 Pro will be much more powerful and offer more features; 8K video and higher frame rates could be two such examples.

PlayStation 5 audio: will the PS5 support Dolby Atmos?

We hope so. Again, the current crop of Xbox One consoles outstrips the PS4 in the audio department, certainly on paper, with Sony's consoles limited to 7.1 audio.

Microsoft's machines, on the other hand, both come with and speaker set-up to truly appreciate the extra dimension of height that Dolby Atmos adds, but if you’ve already got a tasty 5.1.2 system installed or are planning to do so, this would be the icing on the cake.

      PlayStation 5: console

On 13th August, a patent was registered as a , revealed a feature called "suspended gameplay" which gets through less power than the current console. If it was used by one million PS5 owners, that would represent a reduction in electricity consumption equivalent to 1000 US households.

      PlayStation 5: DualShock 5 controller

Between a patent filed in Japan and a leak by PlayStation France, there's some very good intel on what to expect from the PS5 controller.

The first piece of good news is that, like much of the PS5 experience, the PlayStation 5 should be backwards compatible with the PS4 controller. In a comparison table of the PS4 and PS4 Pro, both consoles were listed as compatible with the DS4 and DS5 controllers. Until then, there was no clue that it would even be called the DualShock 5.

Of course, that could just be a typo but it ties in with a patent listed on Japanese World Intellectual Property Organisation's (WIPO) which outlines a new PlayStation controller, looking very much like the next generation of the DualShock range.

The most interesting features are a built-in microphone, customisable rear triggers and the lack of a PS button. The microphone suggests voice control and, hence, why that PS button may not be necessary - switch on and off, and even ask for in-game assistance by voice command. That's the theory, anyway, and in a world of Siris, Alexas, and Google Assistants, why not?

      PlayStation 5: accessories

A patent leak on 5th November 2019 might just have given us a look at the first . Sketches of a mystery cartridge turned up for what many believe are going to be expandable SSD storage modules.

On the one hand memory modules are not new to PlayStation consoles but having easy slot-in, slot-out external hardware could be a game-changer when talking units of 500GB or more. Rather than just saved game data and other media, it could well offer the storage for game libraries instead.

That frees up the need for buying a PS5 with an enormous hard drive to begin with and could make for a much cheaper console. Down that avenue of thinking has emerged the idea of an affordable, entry-level PlayStation 5 which gamers could upgrade for space as and when needed. It certainly fits in with Mark Cerny's promise of lightning fast load times.

PlayStation 5 VR: will the PS5 be PSVR compatible?

Most definitely. Comments from Mark Cerny point towards an even bigger VR push from Sony with the PS5. VR technology is set to be hard designed into the build of the GPU. He didn’t mention whether there would be a PlayStation VR2 headset launched to go with the PS5, though.

Given PSVR is not as strong on resolution as other headsets such as the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive it could make sense to launch a suitably powerful and impressive next-generation headset with the new console.

One interesting twist is Sony may be working on a 3D hologram accessory for the PS5 for multiplayer games. A light emitter with an eye tracker could project an image directly to the user's retina to give the impression of a hologram floating in mid-air. Exactly what images Sony has in mind is another thing but you may want to reconsider multiplayer gaming in your pants.

Which PlayStation 5 games have been announced?

Expect plenty of announcements in the run up to the 2020 launch but there’s been nothing official from Sony on PS5 launch titles. That said, we've spotted a few clues here and there dropped by the games developers themselves.

CD Projekt Red, the developer behind the popular Witcher franchise, has confirmed that its dystopian future game Cyberpunk 2077 is being developed for next generation consoles, which will doubtless include the PS5.

Godfall is the other confirmed PS5 title and we also happen to know that it will be exclusive to the PlayStation platform. . That could be a decent hint that efforts are focused instead on having Gran Turismo 7 ready as a PS5 launch title - enough to get petrol head hearts pumping with nitro, no doubt.

PlayStation 5 games: will the PS5 be backwards compatible?

‘Incredibly powerful’, that’s how Sony has described the backwards compatibility of the PS5, which is potentially good news for both PS5 owners and PS4 owners who don’t wish to upgrade just yet but still want to play online with their friends that do.

What’s not clear is whether this backwards compatibility will be a blanket implementation, or whether it will only work for certain titles. We’d guess a large number of PS4 titles will be compatible, but it will be hit and miss with older PlayStation games.

One online report suggests that the PlayStation 5 will be able to act as an emulator for PS4, PS3, PS2, and even original PlayStation games but we’ll have to wait to see how much truth there is in that. Fingers crossed.

      PlayStation 5 games

It's believed Sony will increase its focus on the subscription-based PlayStation Now cloud gaming platform and its Remote Play feature too.

Microsoft and Sony recently announced that they're working together on cloud computing technologies, which will almost certainly give a boost to PlayStation Now. Until now the platform has been incomplete as far as top gaming titles go and there have been issues with lag and disconnects.

Sony also filed a patent back in 2014 for a service whereby PlayStation games on the platform could be streamed to user devices other than the console itself; something to rival the upcoming and Microsoft xCloud platforms.

Sony is looking to 5G technology to help out while gaming on the move with Remote Play. The service currently allows players to stream games from their consoles to other devices such as tablets, mobiles and the handheld PS Vita. However, this might be bundled in as part of an all-new online platform.

Another interesting part of the connectivity proposal is that it could link players up to a voice assistant. Rumours are that Sony is working on an service which can provide in-game help including whereabouts of game objects as well as hints and tips. If applied with the proper contextual cues, it should be far more efficient than a separate internet search. "Ok, PlayStation. Give me the cheat codes!"
