FRESH details about the hotly-anticipated new PlayStation console have leaked online.

The PlayStation 5 will allegedly support 8K gaming and work with all your old PS4 games when it launches later this year.

The machine's high-end specs emerged online last week in an official listing published seemingly by mistake by US online retailer GameStop.

The listing, which gave previously unknown details on the new console ahead of its launch in time for Christmas, was quickly taken down, reports Tom's Guide.

Japanese tech titan Sony announced the PS5 and details of its revamped controller late last year.

Little is known about the console besides its vague "Holidays 2020" release date (which likely means sometime in October or November).

According to the listing, the console will be powered by a bespoke 8-core AMD chipset.

Previous reports have suggested the gaming machine will be twice as powerful as the PlayStation 4.

The listing also confirmed that the PS5 will also come with 3D Audio – a new technology that immerses players with sounds coming from above, behind, and the sides.

The main point of interest for gamers, however, will be the console's ability to play PS4 games.

Sony has yet to officially confirm so-called "backwards compatibility" would feature in the PS5.

Sony has already confirmed that the console is coming out in time for Christmas this year.

But the PS5's precise release date, as well as its price and what it looks like, remain a mystery.

Apparently, Sony will wait to put a price on the console until its competition – Microsoft's Xbox Series X, also out later this year – gets a number.

Of particular excitement to Sony fans is the rumoured support for "backwards compatibility".

This is the ability to play old games on the PS5 console from all five platforms: PS1, PS2, PSP, PS3 and PS4.

Some of the rumoured launch titles include Gran Turismo 7, MLB The Show 21, Demon Souls Remastered, Godfall and Legendz.

Pre-orders are tipped as going live on the same day as the launch event, but the actual on-sale day is tipped to fall in October 2020.

In other news, the PS5 and Xbox Series X could be delayed by the spread of the coronavirus.

Sony recently confirmed the PS5 will release in time for Christmas 2020.

And, a recent "price leak" suggested that the console could cost £250 more than its predecessor.

   sources who suggest that the scarcity of particular internal parts in the PS5 is driving the price up on the production line, and Sony may choose to pass the buck onto consumers. The sources say the current unit price of the PS5 is about $450, which some in the company worry may already seem too steep to some potential buyers.

  In the GDC-style presentation from Sony's Mark Cerny, he said the company has chosen to go with an 825GB SSD internal hard drive to try and keep costs low for the next-gen console, stating that:

  "It's tempting to add more, but flash certainly doesn't come cheap, and we have a responsibility to our gaming audience to be cost-effective when it comes to what we put in the console."

  Sony has already confirmed that the PS5 will be running on an AMD CPU chip that's based on the third generation of AMD's Ryzen line. It'll be an eight-core, custom-made, beast based on the company's new 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture. The CPU is a custom variant of AMD Radeon's Navi family, and will support ray tracing - an effect that is a staple of Hollywood, and one that's beginning to appear in high-end PC processors and the Nvidia RTX gaming line. 

  It's admittedly disconcerting to think a next-generation console could be running on three-year-old hardware by the time it comes out. Fortunately, in June of last year, a few industry sources speaking with :

  While we're likely quite some time away before Sony shows off the final box design of its PS5, we do have a decent idea of what it might look like sat on our TV shelves, thanks to that may or may not be compatible for the PS5. Current bets have it down as an external SSD that can be slotted into the console for easy memory management of your PS5 games, but - again - it's entirely possible this has nothing to do with the PS5 at all, so take its design and appearance with a pinch of salt.
